What I Do

I am Liz Gessner, a Brooklyn-based writer and writing coach specializing in support for the Common Application and the college application process. I meet privately with students - both in person and via Skype. I work closely with students in order to maximize potential and minimize stress in what is one of the most critical, if potentially overwhelming, tasks of a student’s academic journey.

In addition to application support, I work with individuals on resumes and interview preparation. I also coach high-school and college students in their academic writing. If this sounds like the kind of support you’ve been looking for, read on … and trust that together, we can create something great!

Applying to College

Applying to College

From Ivy League and liberal arts colleges to Top Ten universities, community colleges and graduate programs, I help students navigate the process of applying to institutions of higher learning. I escort them through this complex and usually unfamiliar territory in a manner that minimizes stress and maximizes potential.

Every student is different and so is their application experience. Still, there is a basic progression that we follow no matter what.

First, we work together to create a personal strategy and a schedule for attacking the process. Once we have a clear plan of action, we turn our attention to the application content. Creating this content is a multi-tiered process that includes listing extracurricular activities, writing the Personal Essay and writing the essays and short answers required in various supplements. Resumes are sometimes requested. Interviews are recommended.

I work quite often with scholar-athletes and transfer students, for whom there are often accelerated deadlines.  My one-on-one approach also complements the labor-intensive needs of students for whom English is not their first language or those for whom writing is not their first love.

The Personal Essay and Supplements

The Personal Essay is the centerpiece of the Common Application. It receives the greatest amount of time and attention and rightly so. It is where applicants have the opportunity to show who they are, beyond all the listings of grades, activities, and scores.

The priority, here, lies with allowing the writer’s unique voice to shine through, while prompting them to deepen their responses so the writing becomes clear, specific, and alive.

Once the Personal Essay is complete, we move to the other parts of the application - the extracurricular activities and short answer questions. We approach these sections with a focus that eliminates redundancy and ensures all parts of the application reinforce each other.

Then, it is on to tackling the supplemental essays. Here, the same strategies apply.

I work with high-school and college students on their academic writing. This is done either on an assignment-by-assignment basis or as a regular weekly session addressing whatever writing is in the works.

Here, too, the work focuses on preserving the writer’s unique voice while deepening the responses. Regardless of assignment or subject matter, we work together to shape content that is coherent, detailed, and lively.

Resumes

Resumes are an art form, but a form they are. I guide clients through the process of shaping their information into that form while allowing their unique strengths and perspectives to shine through. The result is a document that is clear, inviting, and packed with information that is thorough and accessible.

Whether done as part of the college application process or as a stand-alone project, the resume created serves as that initial document to which an individual can continuously return to update and further fine-tune.

Interview Preparation

There is nothing like a face-to-face meeting. Interviews can be the step that shifts the balance, supports all the paperwork, and brings the application to life.

I help clients understand they need not be at the mercy of the interviewer. With proper preparation and perspective, they can actively shape this part of the process, using it as an opportunity to gain, as well as give information.

I advise on everything from what to discuss and what questions to ask to how to handle difficult topics, when to schedule this step of the process, and even what to wear.

Other Applications

What started out as support for high school seniors working on their College Application has grown to include just about every kind of application - from pre-school to graduate school and everything in between. The same principles apply: the need for clarity and organization, the challenge of packing as much information as possible into a limited space, and the goal of eliminating redundancy while offering depth and detail.
